WRVO Radio at the State University of New York at Oswego is accepting applications for the position of Senior News Producer/Reporter. The WRVO Stations are a four station network serving Central and Northern New York with an NPR News/Information format. WRVO attempts to present material that challenges, provokes, broadens, educates or entertains, emphasis is placed on issue-oriented news produced in National Public Radio style. WRVO is located in Oswego, NY, at the State University of New York College at Oswego.
Overview
The Senior News Producer leads the planning, and execution of local news content. The SNP reports to the Program Director and works in cooperation with station staff to support the station mission. News planning, reporting, editing and production. Partners with the Program Director (PD) to define and maintain ethical, editorial, artistic, and technical standards for broadcast news programs. Assists with news programming decisions and news operations. Manages news published to the station Web site and other service outlets. Coordinates with PD about special news projects and events, which may require additional staff assistance. Evaluates story selection, what to cover and which to avoid based upon story idea, budgetary, and audience interest. In this age of declining coverage of local concern, carefully selected stories will create the greatest impact on our listeners who turn to WRVO, the region’s first choice for news content.
Duties Editorial Planning, Scheduling, Editing Review story ideas to cover, track issues and events, select reporters for coverage, schedule stories for air, and schedule time for interviewing, writing and editing. Serves as a primary editor to ensure local content is produced in an effective, timely and responsible manner. Looks for new ways to present the content across various platforms and works with the PD to ensure success. Acts as a proactive liaison to various internal and external constituencies to advance the station’s news programming. These include other appropriate radio organizations such as NPR, The Environment Report, Northeast News Hub, AP, other NPR member stations in the state, etc. Convenes a daily news meeting and regularly reports news scheduling to the PD and NPR’s regional editor. The Senior News Producer/Reporter is part of the news team and contributes content on a regular basis. May anchor newscasts. Hosts special segments. Appear as a program guest. Produce various spots, features or special programs.
Administration of Personnel, Budget, Technology Helps set goals and monitor content scheduling and performance. Assists with personnel management includes recruitment and hiring. Works with the PD to manage the news budget. Helps maintain equipment and information systems vital to news planning, news gathering, news production and news presentation.
Community Relations and Support Seeks opportunities to promote public contact to help ascertain public needs and bolster station success. Participates in station events and fundraising activities as appropriate. Crisis Coverage Assists with developing and executing WRVO’s Crisis Coverage Plan.
Qualifications:
Required A four-year degree in journalism. (2 yr degree and equivalent experience may be accepted) Minimum three years broadcast journalism Demonstrated ability to work within a live program environment Demonstrated experience in broadcast digital production, news writing and editing Possess effective communication and interpersonal skills comfortable working with a team of enthusiastic individuals working toward group goals Ability to meet daily deadlines under stressful conditions, while dealing effectively with multiple tasks simultaneously Excellent memory for details. Willingness to work occasional evenings, weekends and some holidays NYS Driver's license Reliable transportation Preferable Full-time professional experience in radio news. Familiarity with public radio news programming standards and values. Possess broad knowledge of local and regional issues. Skills including on-line research, word and spreadsheet processing, and operation of light office equipment.
