SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Electronics Product Staff Engineer works with Marketing, Product Design and R&D to identify and develop electronic technologies for innovative new product offerings. The Electronics Product Staff Engineer must have constant insight and visibility to industry trends & have the ability to identify emerging electronics technologies or processes. The Electronics Product Staff Engineer will work with Product Engineers, Product Designers and R&D chemists in developing prototypes demonstrating technologies that could be incorporated into Crayola product as well as offering technology solutions to Crayola’s product concepts. The Electronics Product Staff Engineer will work closely with Product Engineering to transfer electronic technology to the SKU level during commercialization phases. Electronics Product Staff Engineers are required to have high levels of technical, interpersonal and teamwork skills in working with both technical and creative staffs. The Electronics Product Staff Engineer will be expected to leverage both internal and external resources to support commercialization efforts.
Responsibilities of the position:
Communicates daily with Crayola Hong Kong (CHK) to ensure that product manufacturing milestones and commercialization deliverables are on schedule and adhering to the product timeline, success criteria and performance specifications.
Continually analyzes product designs that feature electronics to identify modifications and improvements that will enhance consumer benefit and profitability.
Explores, identifies, acquires and prototypes with emerging new electronic technologies and disseminates learnings to staff, marketing and product design teams.
Works in partnership with external development partners that are responsible for developing prototype circuits, prototype software and breadboard models to validate concepts that are being developed by Product Design and R&D
Reviews SKU level engineering pilots, final engineering pilots, production ready software initial versions and subsequent revisions and production components and subassemblies to ensure that they are manufactured in accordance to the engineering specification released at engineering turnover to Crayola Hong Kong (CHK).
Focuses on projects in system (concept selected and product selected), and through the course of work generates specifications, schematics, flowcharts, layouts, block diagrams for new electronic products. This work is done within timeline established by the NPD 10 step process
Acts as a technical liaison between Marketing, R&D, Production and Procurement departments, as well as outside vendors to assure the timeliness of deliverables per milestone.
Validates changes, modifies hardware and/or software and provides support documentation to the item specification including but not limited to; bill of materials, software flowcharts, coding conventions, schematics, data sheets, data transmission protocols, product costing, etc.
Oversees the quality of the programming or directly programs microcontroller based circuits and analyzes how efficiently and effectively the embedded program performs on the target hardware.
Engineers electronics for consumer products in accordance to the U.L*, FCC, EMC, ASTM F963-08, EN-71, REACH, CPSIA, and RoHS directives and other specifications in accordance to Toy and products compliance criteria as appropriate.
Basic Requirements of the position:
Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, preferably in Electrical/Electronic or Computer Science Engineering.
Minimum 7 years experience in designing products that feature electronics functionality, consumer product development and offshore manufacturing. Toy manufacturing experience a plus.
Broad based knowledge in areas of electronic hardware and software design, subcomponent design, electronic component vendor base, simulation and emulation techniques, strategies and platforms, and emerging electronic technologies.
Experience with MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Lotus Notes.
Must be able to travel to Asia for extended stays to ensure pre-production milestones are met.
Additional Requirements of the position:
Outstanding communication, interaction and problem solving skills.
Must be capable of commercializing multiple diverse SKU level projects within accordance to the New Product Development schedule.
Skilled at designing electronic circuits and associated control programs, using relevant low level and higher level programming languages in association with appropriate IC/microprocessor integrated development environments.
Must be capable of applying new electronic technologies at the SKU level to positively impact our business either financially and through the launching of innovative new products.
Must possess the ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization regarding financial, scheduling, and/or technically detailed information, often to non technical personnel.
